Summative and Formative Quizzes

Summative Quizzes:

• Summative quizzes are designed to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against a standard or benchmark.

• They typically contribute significantly to the final grade and are used to assess overall comprehension of the subject matter.

Formative Quizzes:

• Formative quizzes are used during the learning process to monitor student understanding and provide ongoing feedback that can be used to improve teaching and learning.

• They are generally low-stakes and are intended to help students identify their strengths and weaknesses, allowing for adjustments in their learning strategies.

• The JoVE Quiz platform provides the flexibility for instructors to decide whether they would like to assign formative or summative assessments.

• We give you the option to make a quiz graded or ungraded. Ungraded quizzes show the students the correct answer response post-submission whereas graded quizzes only show them the score.
